Alocasia 'Sumo'
Alocasia 'Sumo' is a large-growing hybrid with sagittate leaves, dark green to grey upper surfaces and purple-toned stems. As it sizes up, the plant forms an upright clump with substantial petioles and broad blades that need space around the pot.
This warm-growing Alocasia prefers bright filtered light, steady root moisture and a stable container. Larger leaves develop when the plant has enough warmth, root room and water during active growth. Cold wet substrate can quickly lead to yellowing or root damage.
Large leaves and purple-toned stems
- Leaf shape: Large sagittate leaves with a strong Alocasia outline.
- Leaf colour: Dark green to grey upper surface with a grey underside.
- Veins and stems: Purple-toned veins beneath the leaves and dark purple stems.
- Growth habit: Upright clumping hybrid from a rhizomatous base.
- Pot behaviour: Thick petioles and larger leaves need a stable pot as the plant matures.
- Scale: The clump becomes broader and heavier as the root system fills the pot.
How Alocasia 'Sumo' develops in a pot
Alocasia 'Sumo' builds mass through its base, roots and petioles. A small plant may look open at first, then becomes heavier and broader as the rhizome and root system develop. The pot should drain well but hold enough moisture for the larger leaves during warm active growth.
Broad blades lose moisture quickly in warm conditions, so repeated drought stress can leave the petioles limp. A weighty pot also reduces wobbling once the petioles thicken.
Water, light and pot stability for Alocasia 'Sumo'
- Light: Give strong filtered light. Direct hot sun can scorch the leaf surface, while low light can lead to stretched petioles.
- Water: Water thoroughly once the upper substrate begins to dry. Larger plants may dry faster when warm and actively growing.
- Substrate: Use a chunky aroid mix with bark, pumice, perlite or coco chips so the large root system gets both moisture and air.
- Temperature: Around 20–28°C keeps this hybrid in its active range. Cold, wet conditions can damage the rhizome and roots.
- Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity reduces creasing and stuck edges while broad new leaves open.
- Feeding: Feed lightly but regularly during active growth. Strong fertiliser can burn stressed roots.
- Potting: Repot gradually as the root system fills the container. Use a stable pot when the plant becomes top-heavy.
Common stress signs on Alocasia 'Sumo'
- Drooping petioles: A dry rootball, damaged roots or a recent move can cause temporary collapse.
- Yellow lower leaves: Check for overwatering, cold substrate or a potting mix that stays wet too long.
- Torn leaves: Broad blades can split from transport, handling or strong airflow while still soft.
- Root rot: Dense substrate and standing water are the main risks around the rhizome.
- Pests: Spider mites and thrips can mark new leaves, undersides and petiole bases.
Safety note for Alocasia 'Sumo'
Alocasia 'Sumo' contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it away from pets and small children, and avoid contact with the mouth or eyes after handling damaged tissue.
Hybrid parentage of Alocasia 'Sumo'
Alocasia 'Sumo' is a cultivated hybrid of Alocasia 'Portora' × Alocasia princeps. The genus name Alocasia dates to G. Don’s 1839 treatment and relates the group to Colocasia, a closely related aroid genus.
